The All-New Mallory Pike (Baby-Sitters Club, 126)
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: Ann Matthews Martin
Average review score:

Boarding school.....here she comes!
This book is about a girl named Mallory who's going off to Boarding School. She meets two friends there. She also meets an older girl named Jen. Jen's very nice. But Mallory's roomate is not so nice. She took Mallory's earrings without asking and she ripped up the care package that Mallory's friends in the BSC (Baby-Sitters Club) sent her. Mallory then uncovers the past and finds out that because of her roomate's attitude, many kids left. Mallory dosen't want to leave, but she dosen't want her roomate around either!
I think her roomate deserves what happeneds at the end. Something that makes Mallory really happy. But that's all I'm saying. ;-)

Mallory leaves the BSC, SMS, and her family for a new life
Things have been tough for Mal at SMS lately. Kids are calling her Spaz Girl and worse names. She feels her teachers don't understand her and decides to leave for Riverbend,a private boarding school. She misses her BSC friends terribly, but knows she ultimately made the right decision. Mal has trouble with her roomie, Alexis, one of the most difficult girls in the school. But she makes friends with Sarah and Smita, who help her adjust. I think this is one of the best BSC books. I don't want to give away the ending. I wasn't too surprised that Mallory ended up leaving since there aren't as many books about her as the others. Now Ann will probably have a Riverbend Diaries series so we know what's going on with Mal and her friends at bording school.

Mallory is leaving.............. OH NO!
Mallory is my fav BSC Member in the whole siries! Will the books be the same without her? Furthermore, Riverbend, the boarding school Mallory attends isn't all it's cracked up to be. Alexis is Mallory's mean roomate, she misses the BSC and her family as well. Can she shake it off and fit in? Personally I'm pretty sad that Mallory is leaving, but I do admit it's a good book. That's why I gave it 5 stars. Great job Ann!

Spellbound
This was the first Christopher Pike book I ever read, and it spawned an addiction (or obsession depending on how you look at it!) It filled me with both fear and surprise. I found it intruiging, and powerful. It filled the void in my reading, as I had been looking for a long time for something, and didn't know what, this was it. The creativity of the "beast" in this book was exceptional, and it was a different, and more powerful writing style that I had ever found before. Pike's style is wonderful and captavating, and I love each and every one of his works. The setting is perfect, and the story is magical, it left me with chills. I couldn't put the book down! I recommend this book to everyone, get to know one of the greatest writers of the 20th century!

Spellbound is an immaculately composed novel!!
This book was created by one of many great authors. Christopher Pike is his name, and spectacular novels are his game. I have read numerous novels by this author, and this book is by far one of the best. Spellbound will glue you to your seat, while taking you on an adventurous thrill-ride! The suspense this book contains is enough to not only knock your socks off, but spin your head around with fantastic detail. During the period of time that I read this book, with it's incredible detail, I kept visualizing everything happening. First "this", and then "that," and then... "WHOA! Where'd that come from?" And if you've guessed that I'm strongly recommending this book, you've guessed absolutely right! Like I said before, this is an immaculately composed novel! In my opinion, I guess you could say this book sort of has a mind of it's own... =)

Spellbound
I am 23 years old. I read this book when I was a teenager and I still remember it as one of the best books I have ever read. Christopher Pike has a wonderful imagination.

UNIX Programming Environment, The
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall Computer Books (March, 1984)
Authors: Brian W. Kernighan and Rob Pike
Average review score:

good but very outdated...
This book might be a very good book 10-15 years a go, but now most of the stuff is outdated. Don't waste your money on this book, instead buy another book. I especially recommend books from Richard Stevens. They are really well written and answer the needs of programmers and/or users of the present.

Great book, but very confusing examples(code)
This is very good book to begin with. It gives you all you need to know about UNIX to start with (requires C and some *NIX knowledge). It covers most of the areas of C and shell programming, however I don't think this book will be sufficient for all your needs and code is very-very confusing it takes a lot of time to figure it out...
I would highly recommend this book for someone that has some basic knowledge in UNIX and need fast intro (also great as the text book). This book will give you a good idea about everything in *NIX, but ones you done with it, you will want to buy another book.
P.S: I would give it a 5 stars if code would be written in less confusing manner.

Classic and still the best introduction Unix
I can't believe the reviewer who gave two stars to this book saying it's "outdated". Yes, it's dated. Yes, it doesn't tell you about Linux and FreeBSD and GNOME and KDE. But it's still absolutely the best introduction to the Unix *Programming* environment. Whatever else it is, Unix is a programmer's delight. And this book is the best companion you can have to explore Unix.

The book covers a lot of territory. Starting with a good introduction to the Unix command line, it covers Unix tools like sed and awk, shell scripting, system programming with C. It even covers lex and yacc. Never mind, the books age - it's still the best computing book I've ever read and I will gladly recommend it for any one new to Unix.

The authors' writing style is excellent. There is a certain amount of dry humor that I grew to appreciate in subsequent readings. For example, about AWK's name, the commentary dryly says "naming the program after the authors' names shows a certain poverty of imagination"! Remember that Brian Kernighan (one of the book authors) is one of the creator's of AWK. Go and buy this book. NOW.

The Lost Mind

Authors: Christopher Pike and D. Barbour

The Lost Mind
"The Lost Mind" was not one of Christopher Pikes best books. It was kind of confusing, yet kept you wanting to know what happens. It was not very suspenseful, and was'nt very clear about the ending. In the book, a girl (who lost her memory) wakes up next to her dead best friend. After that, everything in the book starts to go down hill. If you want to read a great book by Christopher Pike (my favorite author) then leave "The Lost Mind" on the book shelf and pick up "Remember Me."

Surprising!
This book is about a girl, Jenny, who wakes up in the woods; not knowing where she is or whoshe is and to top things off, there's a dead girl beside her. The book is from Jenny's point of view and documents her journey trying to piece out her past. She's also running away the police, since she's accused of the murder. The ending was quite surprising and is not what happens in many thrillers. My advice, read it and find out the surprising ending.

Amazing Book
I can't say enough about this book, it's a masterpiece in my POV. I used to be a big R.L. Stine fan, but when I read this book 2 years ago, it tottally changed me, it's a story about a girl who wakes up in the woods not remebering anything, and how she goes to find the killer of her dead best friend. I must say it's somewhat Science Fiction (more so than horror) but Its amazing. I read this book in 5 hours and couldn't put it down. A must read for anyone, not just a CP fan, because I still am not that much of his books other that the remeber me trilogy, but this book is a must have (although the title is pretty pathetic).

See You Later

Authors: Christopher Pike and Patricia MacDonald
Average review score:

A Futuristic Paranormal and Powerful Love Story.
Christopher Pike is not my FPA (Frequently Picked Author). Whenever I browsed in our local bookstore, I have to think twice or even thrice whether to buy a title of his book or not (the only writer that i cannot resist is Stephen King though)

But having read the novel See You Later...I was astounded. God! He is even better than King is. Uhhhh...Booo!! I hear you scream...I will not argue much with you but I'm sure all of those who have read Pike's novel will agree with me that he is the Stephen King of YA Horror.

but this novel is not horror. It cannot be classified into any kind of genre. This is an out of the space genre. Although some spot of sci-fi, horror, fantasy and romance can be found in this book.

I don't want to spoil the suspense for you. But one thing, the beginning could be boring for you but getting in the middle...you will never want to put the book down...

In this book, Mark fell in love with a girl named Becky. But was heartbroken when he learned that she is going out with someone else. Then Mark meets a young couple: Vincent and Kara... Kara is strangely obsessed in getting Vincent and Becky together...she succeeded. But then terrible things begin to happen...that affects the entire future of our world...that only love can solve...oh hell tried to explain...but i can't

Oh my God! just read it! read it I beg you and you will love the author and will be hooked forever...I think this is the author's masterpiece so that he can say to you "See You Later" to read his other novels...

PIKE'S BEST EVER!
I love Christopher Pike, and in my opinion this is his best book ever. In it, Pike shows off his great sense of humor (a quality of his writing so often overlooked) and his ability to develop complex characters that you truly care for, along with an amazing plot. Although complicated, the plot is not difficult to understand once you get into it. It is brilliant and unpredictable, and you won't be able to put this book down. But the main reason I prefer this book over all of Pike's other masterpieces is the characters. It's told from the perspective of Mark Forum, a senior in high school who programs computer games. Mark has a brilliant sense of humor, he's witty and smart. He feels like a real person, someone you'd know and care about. The other characters aren't developed quite as well, because they're all seen from Mark's perspective, but all are excelent. The ending of this book was one of the best I've ever read. It was sad but also happy, and it really makes you think. I'd recommend this book to anyone, fans of horror, sci-fi, fantasy, romance, teen novels, whatever. Everyone should read this book

Confusing but the best!
The story can get confusing but once you've read the book through, you'll understand why some things happened in the book. A very gripping story, full of computer science, Science-fiction & romance. A must-read for all pike fans & non-pike fans.

Ancient Evil

Authors: Christopher Pike and Patricia MacDonald
Average review score:

Great book to read!
This was the first book written by Christopher Pike that I read, and after reading it I just bought one book after the other by the same author. I read this book before I read the first one, but I had no trouble following along at all. It does help a little to read the first book, so you know all the characters, but it isn't necessary. This was a great book. It's easy to follow, it has a great plot, and even when you know who the bad guy is, it doesn't take away from the story. Mr.Pike wrote this book with the same style he writes all his books, which makes it great. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because sometimes it gets a little gross, but it doesn't go to far. I recommend it to anyone, whether you're a long-time fan of Mr.Pike, or you've just discovered this wonderful author.

Thriller all the way through!!!!!!!!
If I were to be left on a deserted island, and only allowed to have one book, it would be this one. Chain Letter 2 kept up good suspense, giving you more suspects more motives and more gory action scenes.! With Alison's relationship with her boyfriend breaking up and threatening chain Letters sent to her. She won't have a lot of time to think about her next move. The CARETAKER scares the whole group of friends out of their wits. This is the best book I have ever read.

One of Christopher Pike's Best
I have read the most part of Christopher Pike's book and the sequel to Chain Letter scores high on my all time faves by him. He uses his amazing imagination to stir up a new conflict for the teens who have been to hell and back...but he's making them go back for a second time. It's full of adventure, horror, and suspense. Read it!

Weekend

Author: Christopher Pike
Average review score:

A mysterious thriller that pulls you into its twisted plot.
Being the first time for me to read a Christopher Pike book I found Weekend to be a mysterious thriller that I just could not put down. Pike created a plot that pulled me into the story. I felt as if I was one of the characters going through the same deadly experience

Edggie, Capturing, and Mysterious
A must read! In this book 9 friends go on a vacation in Mexico but once they are there it ends up to be a nighmare where they have to relive a horror to find out the truth about who poisoned one of their friends,Robin, who is about to die. You really have to read this book! Its my personal favorite and ever since I read it Ive been addicted to Pikes novels!

Absolutely fantabulous
This work is Pike at his best. Weekend is one of my favorite books of all time, and I read it about twice a year or more since I first read it almost four years ago. Weekend has all the right stuff...mystery, romance, hot guys, people you can relate to, and comedy. What more could one ask for?

Even though it's one of Pike's earliest works, I think that it is one of his best. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever read Pike or even if you haven't, try this one and see if you don't like it. I think I like this one better than some of his more recent works because it is different from his recent ones. His recent works have more of the supernatural/sci-fi element, and while that is all good and well, I enjoy more grounded works every once in a while, which Weekend is.

The Man Without Qualities Vol. 1: A Sort of Introduction and Pseudo Reality Prevails
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (December, 1996)
Authors: Robert Musil, Sophie Wilkins, and Burton Pike
Average review score:

A Brick for Your Shelf
This is one of the novels that I have most looked foreward to reading. I was so happy to discover the greatest Austrian, if not European, novelist of the 20th century. I loved the title, and I usually love modernist literature and the difficulties it presents.

With that said, reading this novel has been one of the most tedious and painful experiences I ever subjected myself to. I don't really care about any of the characters (how can you care for someone without qualities??), there is no plot, the characterization seems cliched, the ideas seem trite.

This novel probably does give a good indiciation of how the Austro-Hungarian Empire must have felt in relationship to Europe right before World War I--someone just needed to shoot this cumbersome beast and put it out of its misery; the novel is the same way--compared to Kafka, Joyce, Proust, Svevo, even Faulkner, this novel doesn't hold much interest.

I do feel that students of literature should at least read the first section, "A Sort of Introduction" to get a feel for what Musil is doing. But once one gets the point of the novel of ideas, one doesn't need to finish the rest of the novel, unless one is really into it (hey, enough readers seem to like it, maybe you will be one of them.)

Finally, this is the type of book that looks good on a shelf, and the type of book that people read during graduate school and then never read again. It is a very important book, but knowing what Musil accomplished may be more of a prize than reading the entire novel. If anything you can wow your literary friends by mentioning a great Austrian writer with a name that sounds like cereal--don't worry most won't ask you anything more about the book.

Very interesting thoughts, maybe a little too rich in detail
A summary of this book is not at all representative for its contains. The background story is at most uninteresting. What made me read this novel was the delicate description of the inside of Ulrich's head. His thoughts are deeply influenced by the troubled times of his pre-war Vienna, as are the reflections of the other main characters. In my opinion, Musil was way ahead of his times, judging by the scientific description of the passions and thoughts of the persons described. The flaw of the book, as I see it, is that he sometimes allows himself to wander too far off with his mind-spins. The result is slightly incomprehensible at times, if not contradictory. You need time to profit from reading this book, but do it.

Essential Reading
Like Thomas Mann's "Magic Mountain", this immense book aims at giving an overview of the ideas of its time. Musil is a more precise thinker and stylist than Mann, and "The Man Without Qualities" has a lot more to offer than Mann's book.

There are two opposing tendencies in the novel: On the one hand, Musil offers a highly entertaining satirical portrait of Austria-Hungary right before the First World War. His detached hero Ulrich meets all kinds of bizarre people, who happen to be members of the ruling class of the country. Like a vivisecteur, Ulrich analyzes the philosophies and ideologies of his time. On the other hand, he dreams of a kind of new mysticism, an emotional purity that is opposed to the dross surrounding him; together with his sister he embarks on quest for "the other state of being". Musil never finished the novel, he died before he could achieve a conclusion; which may have been impossible anyway.

This gigantic torso of a novel is arguably the greatest novel of the century. I have not yet come across anything that could rival it. Musil's prose is so precise that after reading a few pages you feel that your mind has been refreshed and cleared. This is not a novel to be read in a few days, but even if you never manage to finish it, you will always come back to it.

The Eternal Enemy
Published in Paperback by Simon Pulse (June, 1998)
Author: Christopher Pike
Average review score:

As is usual for C. Pike, sounds awful but is incredible
Every one of Christopher Pike's books sound cheesy, cheep, like it's just some predictable, nonsensical little bit of brainless writing that you will knock back like a fear street. This one was especially sounding so with the VCR of tomorrow. But. But as usual Christopher Pike turned it around with sheer genius, (stop reading now if you haven't read the book) a brilliant touch that the girl could see into the future, not that her VCR could. I think it's ridiculous that people complain about the technical stuff, I find it utterly fascinating and I am sick to death of stories that do not add up. The part where Pike shows that cybernetics take over the world was a subtle masterpiece, in that he explained people's feelings and thoughts-there was no evil plot (initially) by robots, people all simply wanted to be more intelligent and so took the boosts, becoming more and more computerised. The most interesting thing is, ask yourself, "wouldn't you do the same". I really don't know.well, another great book of Christopher Pike's and I've forgotten a lot of the plot so if my review is off I'm very sorry.

David's Review
I am reviewing the book "The Eternal Enemy" its about this girl that buys a VCR from the local department store so she can record a movie to show at this party's she's throwing. But instead of taping the movie she records the next nights news. It was fun at first until she finds herself in the news. I give the book 4 stars because the story is scary and great throughout the whole book.

An incredibly intelligent novel
I LOVE this book. I think the reason people were critizing the "technical stuff" was just because they are too young to understand it. I really feel that this is an adult book trapped behind a teen book's cover. Or at least, a book that is more appropriate for more intelligent teenagers, and adults. It's extremely deep and fascinating, with many levels of meaning. It starts off as a typical teen novel ... You've got the heroine, Rela, and she has typical teenager problems: dealing with her family, a crush on a boy, friends, etc. Then she buys a VCR that can record the future, and you think "Oh boy, this looks cheesy." But soon she begins to have terrible nightmares about the cyborgs of the future, and the novel becomes a tragic vision of a future dystopia that Rela must try to prevent. It also tells the tragic story of her relationship with her grandfather, who only wanted to use technology to save humanity, and ended up destroying it. In the end, all the loose ends tie together and this novel makes more sense than you could possibly have imagined from the outset. Christopher Pike is a BRILLIANT writer.

The Listeners
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)

Average review score:

NOT PIKE'S PEAK...
Having previously read two outstanding books by Christopher Pike, "The Cold One" and "The Season of Passage", I eagerly picked up "The Listeners", thinking that I was getting another great read. Wrong! This book, while it has its moments, pales in comparison.

The book gets off to a promising start, and the premise of the book is pretty straight forward. An FBI agent, David Connor, reeling from a bust gone bad, is asked to go undercover as a magazine reporter and investigate a channeling group called the Listeners, who channel an entity called the "Big Mind" which is a sort of collective consciousness, coupled with ancestral memory.

Central to the Listeners existence is a set of identical twins, Lucy and Vera Temple, beautiful, young women who possess great psychic ability. When David meets them, there develops a mutual attraction between David and Lucy, and they ultimately fall in love. Little do they know that a great evil is waiting for them. Something primeval is lurking below the conscious surface, ready to spring forth and rock their world. When it does so, David is called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice to save mankind. What happens at the end, however, is sure to surprise the reader.

One caveat is that this book is not suitable for those in the nine to twelve age group, as Amazon.com suggests, given the violence, sexually explicit references, and four letter words interspersed throughout the book. It seems more suitable for a young adult audience.

It was one of the best books that I have ever read
In the book The Listeners, I was awed by the intensity of this book. The story about the twins and the intricate love story that Mr. Pike has written makes me wonder if there will ever be another sequel. The sheer horror of the story made me extremly scared and I loved every minute of this book. I highly recommed this book to anyone with an open mind.

A Truely Wonderful Book!
The Listeners was one of my all time faverote books by Christopher Pike...and I have read ALL of them. Pike takes your imagination on a turn through history and science with his creative plot. The book starts out with an FBI agent, David, who is sent to investigate a group called the big mind. The big mind is a group of people who look (channel) into the past. Soon does David discover that there is more to the story than what meets the eye.

I would recomend this book for people who love a little bit of romance, mystery, and even creative history. What I mean by history is that the author will leave you wondering how the world was even brought about. And if you are a Pike fan...this is a must read!

While it is hard to explain as to why this book was so wonderful there is one line that leaves me captivated-The purpose of life is unknown. It is a mystery, and you know mysteries can be lived but never explained. Do you understand?-

So overall this book was a great read!
